Lucas Torreira assault case in Istanbul moves to trial

On 12 May, Galatasaray midfielder Lucas Torreira was punched in the head outside a hotel in Istanbul's Beşiktaş district. The attacker, identified as Yusuf Y., said he acted after seeing photos of Torreira shared with a club photographer and claimed "platonic" feelings that turned to hatred. Torreira's driver, Eray Saylan, intervened and also struck the assailant.

Prosecutors in Istanbul prepared an indictment after the parties failed to reach a settlement. The indictment seeks a prison term of up to five years for Yusuf Y. on charges of simple injury and repeated threats, and up to one year for Eray Saylan on a charge of simple injury for his intervention. The case will be heard by the Istanbul Asliye Ceza Mahkemesi.
