Lucas Vázquez honors Spanish train crash victims
During Bayer Leverkusen’s 5-2 DFB-Pokal victory against 1. FC Nürnberg, player Lucas Vázquez dedicated his goal and the team's win to the victims of a devastating train collision in Spain.
Following his late goal, the 35-year-old former Real Madrid player knelt on the pitch, bowed his head, and pointed a finger toward the sky in a gesture of remembrance. On social media, Vázquez expressed his condolences, stating, “For you! This victory and this goal are dedicated to the victims and their families. My entire sympathy on this day, which hurts us Spaniards so much!”
The tribute follows a high-speed train collision in the Castilla-La Mancha region of Spain, which resulted in at least 68 deaths and over 100 injuries. Preliminary findings suggest human error may have contributed to the accident. Spain has entered a three-day period of national mourning.
