Italy's Five Star Movement proposes sovereign wealth fund for infrastructure
The Movimento 5 Stelle (M5S) plans to introduce a sovereign wealth fund aimed at financing long‑term economic development and infrastructure projects in Italy. The proposal, to be presented in Parliament in the coming days, would mobilise national savings on a voluntary basis, allowing citizens and institutional investors to invest in the fund under market‑based terms. It seeks to enhance public assets, attract private capital, and channel resources into strategic sectors such as infrastructure, productive chains, innovation, research, technology transition, and economic security. The fund could also incorporate overseas assets held by Italians, encouraging their repatriation. Funding would be supplemented by issuing special financial instruments and by possible transfers of public shareholdings. The M5S aims to position the fund as a key element of the next government's economic programme, promoting competitive, sustainable growth and reducing regional disparities.
