Lucca officials debate urban vision for new LuccArena project
A political debate has emerged in Lucca regarding the development of new sports and event infrastructure, specifically the ‘LuccArena’ project. Luca Menesini, former president of the province of Lucca and current president of the Capannori city council, has criticized the current administration for a perceived lack of a cohesive urban vision. While Menesini supports the necessity of the arena to address the region's infrastructure delays, he suggests relocating the project further east to improve accessibility and parking, arguing that current projects appear disconnected.
In response, city councilor and former urban planning assessor Serena Mammini defended the administration's approach. Mammini asserted that Lucca possesses a clear urban vision codified through its structural plan, operational plan, and building regulations. She noted that these planning tools are the result of long-term political and administrative processes involving multiple administrations, countering the claim that the city lacks a strategic direction.
