Lucerne authorities launch safety and prevention initiatives
Authorities in the Canton of Lucerne, Switzerland, have implemented several public safety and prevention measures across different sectors.
In response to violence prevention efforts, Lucerne police conducted targeted person checks in the city of Lucerne. Over the course of several weeks, officers inspected more than 250 individuals, resulting in the seizure of 35 knives and other dangerous objects. The initiative aimed to mitigate violence often linked to alcohol or substance use during evening and weekend hours.
In a separate safety operation, police conducted speed checks near school zones following the autumn holidays to protect children during darker commuting hours. Out of approximately 20,000 vehicles checked, 480 speeding violations were recorded, leading to eight cases being referred to the public prosecutor.
Additionally, the Canton of Lucerne has launched the ‘Stopp Gewalt!’ campaign to combat domestic and gender-based violence. Using a green door as a symbol for what occurs behind closed doors, the campaign encourages citizens to recognize and report violence. The initiative is part of a broader action plan adopted in late 2024, which includes expanding educational programs and victim support services, such as the planned introduction of forensic nurses in 2027.
