Lucerne downgrades forest fire risk level

The Canton of Lucerne has downgraded its forest fire risk level from ‘large’ to ‘significant’ following recent rainfall, increased humidity, and cooler temperatures. This change results in a conditional fire ban being implemented in coordination with Central Swiss cantons and the fire inspectorate.

Despite the easing of risk, caution remains necessary, particularly in the northern part of the canton where rainfall was less abundant. Authorities warn that recent precipitation has only superficially moistened the forest soil, leaving deep-rooted trees and groundwater levels unaffected. Dry fallen leaves continue to pose a fire hazard.

Residents are advised to use only designated fire pits and to avoid lighting fires during strong winds or thunderstorms. Strict precautions are recommended to prevent fires caused by discarded smoking materials, sparks from grills, or fireworks.
