Lucerne police conduct large-scale hostage simulation exercise
On Thursday, October 15, 2026, the Lucerne police conducted a large-scale training exercise in the city of Lucerne involving over 100 emergency responders. The drill, orchestrated by the Aargau Cantonal Police, simulated a hostage situation triggered by reports of gunfire at the government building on Bahnhofstrasse.
To ensure realism, the participating Central Swiss emergency forces were not informed of the specific scenario in advance. The exercise lasted approximately seven hours, including a debriefing session. Police Commander Adi Achermann reported that the exercise was successful, noting that alarm and command processes functioned well, though further optimizations will be analyzed based on the findings.
