Lucha Libre faces cultural gentrification amid tourism growth

Mexican Lucha Libre is undergoing a transformation driven by tourism and commercialization, leading to what experts describe as cultural gentrification. While the influx of visitors and brand collaborations create new revenue streams, there are concerns that this traditional popular spectacle is being converted into a premium experience.

In Mexico City, venues like Arena México have become integrated into major tourist circuits. Travel platforms such as Civitatis now offer various experience packages, ranging from standard tours to VIP options that include ringside seating, transportation, food, and direct interaction with wrestlers.

Ulises Torres, a social studies specialist at UNAM, uses the term 'cultural gentrification' to describe the appropriation of Lucha Libre symbols and the changing nature of the spaces where matches occur. Additionally, researcher José Ángel Garfías notes that ticket prices have increased by as much as 50% in some instances, reflecting the shift toward a more commercialized and monetized product.
