Slovakia: PM Fico disputes MP's same-sex marriage

Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico has criticized the marriage of Lucia Plaváková, a Progressive Slovakia (PS) MP and head of the parliamentary human rights committee, calling it an ‘unconstitutional provocation’. Fico stated that the constitution defines marriage as a union between a man and a woman, and argued that if Plaváková wishes to change this, she must win elections and change the constitution.

Plaváková and the PS party have rejected these claims, asserting that she has not violated any laws or the constitution. Because Slovakian law does not permit same-sex marriage, Plaváková celebrated her wedding abroad.

Other Slovakian politicians are also taking legal action regarding marriage recognition. Michal Sabo, an MP for Progressive Slovakia, announced that he and his husband are suing the state. Sabo alleges that the government, through the Ministry of Interior and the Prime Minister, has abused political power and violated their rights as European Union citizens by refusing to recognize their marriage, which was legally concluded in Austria.

The legal challenges center on whether Slovakia is obligated to recognize same-sex marriages performed in other EU member states, following recent rulings by the European Court of Justice.
