Luciano Ambrósio uses photography to challenge ableism

In observance of the National Day of Struggle for Persons with Disabilities, photographer Luciano Ambrósio is using art to challenge ableism and highlight citizenship rights. Ambrósio, a 57-year-old resident of Ceilândia who lost his sight at age 24, has spent the last decade developing an inclusive photography practice.

Using assistive technology, including voice-support software and mobile descriptions, Ambrósio captures unique perspectives of his environment. He relies on sensory inputs such as the texture of the ground, terrain inclination, and ambient sounds to map his surroundings.

He is currently preparing to publish his first independent book, ‘Meu olhar’, scheduled for release in November. The 120-page work will feature a collection of his images and 100 poems.
