FIGC receivership: CONI to vote on Malagò appointment

The Italian sports governing body, CONI, is set to hold decisive votes on October 6 regarding the potential receivership of the FIGC. The proposal follows a controversy involving Giovanni Malagò, who was elected FIGC president but faced scrutiny over whether he was a registered member at the time of his candidacy.

One potential resolution being discussed is the appointment of Malagò himself as the special commissioner of the FIGC to lead the federation toward new elections. This approach aims to avoid institutional division within CONI.

Lega Serie A has expressed strong opposition to the receivership, calling it “inopportune” and warning it could cause chaos within the Italian football system. The league has reiterated its support for Malagò. Meanwhile, Minister for Sport Andrea Abodi has emphasized the importance of respecting both the rules and the autonomy of sport, while noting that the government will maintain institutional collaboration and oversight.

International concerns have also been raised. UEFA has signaled that a prolonged extraordinary management of the FIGC could undermine trust and potentially impact Italy's role as a co-host for Euro 2032.
