Caivano investigation launched into death of construction worker
An investigation has been opened by the Procura di Napoli Nord into the death of Salvatore Calignano, a 61-year-old construction worker found severely injured in an isolated road in Caivano. Calignano died at the Ospedale del Mare after being discovered with multiple traumas, which he reportedly attributed to a fall from a ladder while working on a warehouse roof.
Investigators are examining whether the incident was a workplace accident involving undocumented labor. Three individuals, including the employer and the owners of the warehouse, are under investigation for manslaughter in a cooperative capacity. A central point of the inquiry is the suspicious timing of Calignano’s employment; records show he was officially hired on October 1, just one day before the incident, despite having received unemployment benefits in September.
The victim's wife, Carmela, has expressed a demand for justice, alleging that her husband may have been abandoned in the street after the accident to hide the location of the injury. Labor unions, including UIL and CGIL, have announced they will join the proceedings as civil parties to address the circumstances of the death.
