Luciano Pavarotti: Remembering the legendary Italian tenor

September 6 marks the anniversary of the passing of legendary Italian tenor Luciano Pavarotti, who died in 2007. Born in Modena on October 12, 1935, Pavarotti became one of the most celebrated operatic voices of his era, credited with bringing opera to a much wider global audience.

Pavarotti’s professional career took flight following his victory at the Achille Peri competition in 1961, which led to his debut as Rodolfo in Puccini’s ‘La Bohème’. His talent eventually took him to the world's most prestigious stages in Amsterdam, Vienna, Zurich, and London, as well as across the Atlantic.

One of his most iconic cultural moments occurred in 1990 during the FIFA World Cup in Italy, where he performed alongside Plácido Domingo and José Carreras. This performance, which reached hundreds of millions of viewers, significantly boosted the popularity of opera recordings and cemented the association between the aria ‘Nessun Dorma’ and major sporting events.
