Lucid Group announces $1.4 billion cost cuts and robotaxi expansion
Lucid Group disclosed a $1.4 billion cost‑reduction program targeting 2026, aiming to restore profitability after years of revenue growth without earnings. The plan includes launching a midsize SUV priced below $50,000 on a new platform, alongside a new Atlas electric drive unit designed to lower battery and manufacturing costs.
The company also detailed its robotaxi strategy, partnering with Uber, autonomous‑driving specialist Nuro and Hertz’s Oro Mobility unit. Uber has invested $500 million and the Saudi‑backed Ayar Third Investment (linked to the Public Investment Fund) contributed $550 million. Lucid intends to field between 20,000 and 35,000 driverless vehicles in major U.S. markets, with testing already conducted in Las Vegas and the San Francisco Bay Area. The partnership was highlighted at the January 2026 Consumer Electronics Show, showcasing a Level‑4 self‑driving system with a 360‑degree sensor suite.
Additional initiatives include completing a new factory in Saudi Arabia and expanding the Lucid lineup with three midsize models—Cosmos, Earth and a third yet‑to‑be‑named vehicle—targeted at efficiency‑focused consumers.
