Luck Win Bookstore to close Mong Kok branch after 48 years

Luck Win Bookstore, a long-standing independent bookshop in Hong Kong, has announced that its Mong Kok branch will cease operations by December 31. The shop, which has been in business for 48 years, is currently holding a clearance sale with discounts of up to 55 percent.

The closure follows a period of significant pressure on Hong Kong’s independent bookstores. Earlier this year, Luck Win and Elmbook were banned from participating in the city’s official annual book fair, a move that many industry observers viewed as a critical blow to their financial viability.

Other independent retailers, such as Elmbook and various other local shops, have also faced closures or announced upcoming shutdowns due to a combination of factors, including tightening political restrictions, increased government inspections, rising rents, and changing consumer habits.
