Lucknow struggles to regulate e-rickshaw fleet
The Allahabad High Court’s Lucknow bench has directed the Uttar Pradesh government to urgently develop a policy to regulate the growing number of e-rickshaws in Lucknow. The city faces significant challenges in managing the fleet, with estimates of operating vehicles ranging from 80,000 to 125,000.
Previous attempts to control the vehicles through zone-based color coding, QR code stickers, and designated stands have largely failed due to poor enforcement and driver resistance. Despite police efforts to divide the city into 16 zones and allot specific areas via a lottery system, many drivers remain unaware of the regulations, and unauthorized movement across the city continues.
