Italian summer cultural program adds night museum openings and free exhibitions

Across Italy, cultural institutions are extending opening hours and offering free admission to attract visitors during the hot summer months. The Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Tourism have introduced experimental night openings for major monuments such as the Colosseum, the Pantheon, the Duomo terraces in Milan and historic sites in Rome, Turin, Ravenna and the Adriatic coast, allowing visitors to explore them after sunset and reduce daytime crowds.

Intesa Sanpaolo’s Gallerie d’Italia network in Milan, Naples, Turin and Vicenza will be open to the public free of charge on Ferragosto (15 August), showcasing exhibitions ranging from Renaissance masterpieces to contemporary works by Arnaldo Pomodoro, Shepard Fairey and photographer Nick Brandt. Similar free‑entry events are promoted by other museums and galleries, with guides on how to plan evening visits and take advantage of recurring free‑day programmes.

Local festivals complement the museum offerings. Luco dei Marsi (L’Aquila region) will host a two‑week programme of music, art, food and heritage events in August, while the Molise region promotes its most beautiful villages for summer tourism. In Trani, the “Cinema Fuori Museo” outdoor film series will screen classic movies under the stars. These coordinated activities aim to boost cultural participation, support regional tourism and provide cooler, less crowded experiences for residents and visitors alike.
