Luděk Mikloško, West Ham and Baník Ostrava legend, dies at 64

Former West Ham United and Baník Ostrava goalkeeper Luděk Mikloško has died at the age of 64 following a battle with cancer. Mikloško, affectionately known as ‘Ludo’, was a prominent figure in both English and Czech football.

During his tenure at West Ham between 1990 and 1998, he made hundreds of appearances and was named the club’s Hammer of the Year in the 1990-91 season. He is particularly remembered for his performance in May 1995, which helped prevent Manchester United from securing the Premier League title on the final day of the season. He later returned to the club as a goalkeeping coach.

In the Czech Republic, Mikloško began his career at Baník Ostrava and most recently served as the club’s sporting director. He was the first Czechoslovakian player to make a significant impact in England, paving the way for future Czech internationals in the Premier League.

His family confirmed his passing, noting that he had made the decision in late 2024 to stop undergoing chemotherapy to prioritize his quality of life. Tributes have been paid by West Ham United, Baník Ostrava, and various football figures across Europe.
