Ludovic Orban criticizes Romanian intelligence services

Former Romanian Prime Minister and presidential advisor Ludovic Orban has accused the country's intelligence services of being completely out of civilian control. Speaking on B1 TV, Orban described Romania as having a militarized intelligence system that is “totally uncharacteristic of European democracies.”

Orban alleged that agencies such as the Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI) and the Protection and Guard Service (SPP) interfere in areas including political parties, administration, justice, the private sector, and the press. He suggested these services operate from the shadows to direct major political alliances and ensure the stability of underground political agreements.

The controversy follows Orban's claims that intelligence services influence political dynamics, including the relationship between Nicușor Dan and the PSD. He further criticized the leadership of these agencies, specifically targeting the legality of certain appointments and the lack of requirement for directors to be civilians.
