Lufthansa and Fraport launch Gate of the Future at Frankfurt Airport

Lufthansa and Fraport have inaugurated the ‘Gate of the Future’ at Gate A16 in Terminal 1 of Frankfurt Airport. This pilot project aims to modernize the boarding process and enhance the passenger experience through digital innovation and improved service models.

Key features of the redesigned gate include lounge-style seating, flexible workspaces, and large-scale digital displays, including 360-degree monitors providing real-time flight updates. The traditional fixed service counter has been largely replaced by mobile staff equipped with tablets, allowing them to assist passengers directly throughout the gate area. Passengers can also access digital self-services via QR codes.

The project utilizes Lidar sensors to anonymously track passenger movement and determine which seating and service concepts are most effective. The companies intend to evaluate the results through the first quarter of 2027 to decide which elements will be implemented at other gates. Lufthansa Hub Manager Francesco Sciortino and Fraport COO Dietmar Focke emphasized that the initiative seeks to bring premium service to the ground, ensuring more efficient and pleasant departures.
