Lufthansa flight diverted to Lyon after passenger powerbank fire

A Lufthansa Airbus A321-200 flight from Frankfurt to Lisbon was forced to make an emergency diversion to Lyon, France, after a passenger's powerbank caught fire on Saturday night. The aircraft was carrying 198 passengers and six crew members at the time of the incident.

Cabin crew responded immediately by placing the burning lithium-ion device into a specialized fire-resistant lithium safe bag. The pilots declared an emergency to secure landing priority and landed the aircraft safely in Lyon. No injuries were reported among the passengers or crew. Following the landing, passengers were provided with hotel accommodations and were rebooked on alternative flights to Lisbon for the following day.

Lufthansa noted that since January 2026, the airline has prohibited the use and charging of powerbanks during flights, though passengers are permitted to carry up to two devices in their cabin baggage under specific safety conditions. The incident highlights ongoing safety concerns regarding lithium-ion batteries in civil aviation.
