Lufthansa introduces new seat categories and fees on short‑haul flights

Lufthansa Group, which includes Swiss International Airlines, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Air Dolomiti, Lufthansa City Airlines and ITA Airways, announced a new seat categorisation for short‑ and medium‑haul flights effective 22 July. Seats are now split into a “First Row Seat” – the front row of Business Class – with a €36 supplement, and a “Back Seat” – the rear rows of Economy – priced at €12, down from €15. The change is commercial only; seat hardware remains unchanged. Elite members, Economy Flex travelers and other qualifying passengers keep free access to both categories.

On long‑haul routes, Lufthansa’s Allegris business‑class cabins on Airbus A350‑900 and Boeing 787‑9 aircraft also use a tiered pricing model. Five seat types are offered; the standard “Classic” seats are free, while “Privacy” seats and other premium options carry extra fees unless the passenger holds a Miles & More HON Circle or Senator status. Seats can be pre‑selected for a charge or assigned at check‑in.
