Lufthansa adds paid ‘First Row’ and ‘Back Seat’ seats on European flights

Lufthansa Group is expanding its ancillary‑revenue strategy by introducing paid seat‑selection categories on European routes. Passengers can now reserve a premium “First Row” seat in the front of the cabin for an additional fee – about €29 on Lufthansa flights and 40 CHF on Swiss – while a new “Back Seat” option offers the cheapest rear‑cabin seats for a small surcharge, roughly €3 on Lufthansa and 15 CHF on Swiss. The changes apply across the group’s carriers, including Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Air Dolomiti, Lufthansa City and Swiss, but not ITA Airways or Edelweiss. The move blurs the line between legacy network carriers and low‑cost airlines by segmenting seats by location and comfort and aims to boost non‑ticket revenue.
