Lufthansa pilot school investment in Tancos sparks regional debate
As part of the partial privatization of TAP, Lufthansa has announced a 500 million euro investment to establish a new pilot school in Tancos, Santarém. Local political figures and regional authorities have responded to the decision with varying perspectives.
In Tancos, the Chega party and the Médio Tejo Intermunicipal Community have expressed support for the project, suggesting it could serve as a catalyst for a regional aeronautical hub. However, the Médio Tejo community emphasized that the investment must be accompanied by improvements to road crossings over the Tejo River to ensure regional accessibility.
Conversely, the decision has faced criticism from the Baixo Alentejo Intermunicipal Community (CIMBAL), which advocated for Beja as the site for the school. Nuno Palma Ferro, the Mayor of Beja, rejected the idea of hosting the school in Beja, arguing that the high volume of military traffic at Air Base No. 11 makes the area incompatible with the fixed schedules of a pilot school. Instead, Ferro stated that Beja is focusing its strategy on the broader aeronautical industry, citing potential investments such as an Embraer factory.
Former Beja Mayor Paulo Arsénio revealed that Lufthansa had previously met with Beja officials in 2025 to discuss the possibility of establishing pilot training facilities for both Lufthansa and NATO in the region, describing Beja as an “excellent solution” before the Tancos decision was finalized.
