Lufthansa rebrands Green Fares to Impact Fares following court ruling
Lufthansa Group has announced that its “Green Fares,” introduced in 2023, will be renamed “Impact Fares.” This rebranding follows legal challenges from the environmental group Deutsche Umwelthilfe, which led to rulings by the Cologne Regional Court and the Cologne Higher Regional Court regarding the airline's environmental advertising.
The courts found that Lufthansa's previous branding could mislead passengers into believing that sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) would be used specifically on their particular flight, whereas the fuel could be used elsewhere in the airline's operations at a later date.
Under the new “Impact Fares” structure, Lufthansa Group commits to using an additional quantity of SAF within six months of a booking's departure. For European flights, the SAF contribution will account for 20% of the estimated CO2 emissions, with the remaining 80% directed toward climate protection projects. For intercontinental routes, the split is 10% for SAF and 90% for climate projects. Passengers continue to receive benefits such as additional miles, status points, and flexible rebooking options.
