Lufthansa retires Airbus A340-600 from service
Lufthansa has concluded its operations with the Airbus A340-600, marking the end of the airline's relationship with this specific model. The aircraft, which recently completed a final flight from Berlin to Washington Dulles International Airport, was met by crowds of aviation enthusiasts who gathered to celebrate the 17-year-old jet.
Despite its popularity among enthusiasts, the A340-600 was often viewed as a commercial failure due to its four-engine configuration, which resulted in higher fuel consumption compared to modern twin-engine competitors like the Airbus A350 and Boeing 787 Dreamliner. At the time of its launch in 2002, its 75.3-meter length made it the world's longest commercial passenger aircraft, requiring special airport permissions and onboard camera systems to assist pilots with visibility.
While Lufthansa is retiring the -600 variant, it will continue to operate the shorter A340-300 model. Other airlines, including Swiss, Edelweiss Air, Syrian Air, and Iran Aseman Airlines, also continue to utilize variants of the A340. The industry at large is increasingly shifting toward more fuel-efficient, two-engine long-haul aircraft.
