Lufthansa retires final Airbus A340-600 after 23 years

Lufthansa has retired its last Airbus A340-600 following the arrival of flight LH419 from Washington D.C. at Frankfurt Airport. The aircraft, registered as D-AIHW, completed an eight-hour and five-minute flight carrying 267 passengers and 15 crew members.

The retirement marks the end of a 23-year era for the quad-engine model at the airline. Since receiving its first A340-600 in November 2003, Lufthansa has operated a total of 24 aircraft of this type, transporting over 40 million passengers globally without incident.

This phase-out is part of a broader fleet modernization strategy aimed at increasing efficiency and reducing fuel consumption and emissions. Lufthansa plans to replace older models, including the A340-300, A330-200, and Boeing 747-400, with newer generation aircraft such as the Airbus A350-1000 and Boeing 787 Dreamliner. The company aims for 70% of its long-haul fleet to consist of new-generation aircraft by 2028.
