Lufthansa to continue cutting short-haul flights, impacting Bydgoszcz

Lufthansa is implementing a long-term strategy to reduce short-haul connections, a move that effectively eliminates the immediate prospect of restoring flights between Bydgoszcz and Frankfurt. The airline previously suspended these services, citing high fuel prices driven by Middle East tensions and a shift in corporate vision.

Lufthansa board member Dieter Vranckx confirmed in an interview with Handelsblatt that the strategy to limit short-distance routes will continue through 2028. This shift toward a hub-and-spoke model has already impacted other Polish cities; flights to Rzeszów have been cut entirely, and Gdańsk has lost its direct connection to Munich.

For Bydgoszcz, the loss of the Frankfurt hub leaves Warsaw, operated by PLL LOT, as the primary connection point. This development challenges regional development strategies that aimed to maintain two major transit hubs for the area.
