Lugg data identifies mid-September to mid-October as best time to move

Data from the on-demand moving service Lugg, analyzing over one million local moves from the past five years, suggests that the best time to move is between mid-September and mid-October. During this window, movers are more available and weather conditions are more favorable for heavy lifting without the high competition seen in other months.

Contrary to common advice suggesting January is the cheapest month to move, Lugg’s data indicates that the month has a minimal impact on price for local moves, with a gap of less than 4% between the cheapest and most expensive months. While interstate movers may apply peak-season surcharges during summer months as defined by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, local moving prices remain relatively stable throughout the year.

August remains the busiest month for moving services, running approximately 23% above the monthly average. Because roughly 75% of Americans move within the same state, these local moving trends reflect the typical relocation experience for most citizens.
