Lugg data shows Labor Day surges in gig moving demand

Data from the on-demand moving service Lugg indicates that Labor Day weekend consistently sees a surge in demand, running 13% to 26% higher than typical late-summer weekends over the last three years. This spike is particularly pronounced in cities like Boston, where volume can reach roughly twice its usual weekend levels due to residential lease turnovers coinciding with the holiday.

Despite the high volume of work, the gig economy for movers faces significant retention challenges. Due to the strenuous physical nature of the job, the median tenure for movers who started at least five years ago was only 132 days, with fewer than 10% still active after five years. While most workers exit the field quickly, some individuals, such as San Francisco-based mover Edgar Teran, have managed to sustain the work for nearly a decade.
