Lugo church closes temporarily following vandalism incidents

The Collegiata church in Lugo, Ravenna, has implemented temporary restrictions on access following a series of vandalism incidents. Parish priest Don Leonardo Poli decided to close the church after morning Mass and secure external entrances until an alarm system can be installed to protect the presbytery.

Recent incidents involved a group of five youths, aged between 12 and 15, who were captured on surveillance footage. The group reportedly damaged a new candelabra valued at approximately 2,000 euros, tampered with offering boxes, and damaged plastic candles. Don Poli has filed a formal complaint with the police, providing video evidence and testimony.

Don Poli noted that these events follow previous instances of disruptive behavior in the area. He attributed the underlying issue to a lack of parental supervision, stating, “The real problem is the absence of families.” Despite the challenges, the priest noted positive engagement from some local students who participate in church activities.
