Luigi Cavallari, husband of Italy's family minister Eugenia Roccella, found dead in Lake Vico

Luigi Cavallari, an 84‑year‑old architect and university professor, disappeared on 27 June 2026 after jumping into Lake Vico near Viterbo during a boat outing with his wife, Minister for Family, Birth and Equal Opportunities Eugenia Roccella. A coordinated search led by the Prefecture of Viterbo involved the fire brigade, police, Carabinieri, Guardia di Finanza and specialist teams using sonar and sub‑aquatic robots. The operation lasted more than a month.

On the morning of 4 August 2026 divers recovered Cavallari’s body at a depth of about 18‑19 metres, roughly 20 metres from the shore and less than a kilometre from the point where he was last seen. The minister thanked the rescuers, stating “a period of painful waiting ends”. The Viterbo prosecutor has ordered an autopsy; early hypotheses include thermal shock caused by the temperature difference between the water and the air.

The recovery concludes a prolonged, high‑profile rescue effort that drew nationwide attention and expressions of condolence from political leaders and the local community of Ronciglione.
