Luigi Di Sarno family seeks clarity after botulism death

The family of Luigi Di Sarno, a 52-year-old man who died from botulism poisoning, is seeking legal clarity regarding his treatment at the Tirrenia Hospital in Belvedere Marittimo. One year after his death, lawyers for the family allege that medical staff misidentified his clinical symptoms as intoxication or psychological distress.

According to the legal team, Di Sarno exhibited severe neurological symptoms, including eyelid paralysis, difficulty speaking, breathing, and swallowing, after consuming a sandwich from a food truck in Diamante. Despite these signs, lawyers claim medical reports described him as ‘lucid and tranquil’ and suggested he consult a psychologist.

Di Sarno was discharged from the hospital but his condition rapidly deteriorated while traveling on the A2 motorway, where he eventually died. An autopsy confirmed the cause of death as botulinum toxin intoxication. The family is now urging prosecutors to investigate potential medical negligence, citing audio recordings from the victim and witness testimony from a friend to support their claims.
