Luigi Mangione arrest body camera footage unsealed

Newly unsealed police body camera footage has been released, documenting the December 2024 arrest of Luigi Mangione at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania. The footage follows a petition by CNN and was unsealed by a Manhattan judge. The videos capture the initial encounter where officers approached Mangione, who was wearing a face mask and a ski hat, and the subsequent discovery of a gun magazine in his backpack.

In August, Mangione pleaded guilty to federal stalking charges related to the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, who was shot in Manhattan. During his federal plea, Mangione admitted to using a 3-D printer to manufacture parts of a firearm. He faces a potential life sentence in his federal case, with sentencing scheduled for December 18.

Mangione also faces state murder charges in New York. His defense attorneys have filed a motion to dismiss these charges, arguing that the prosecution constitutes double jeopardy. A judge has ruled that while certain items seized at the restaurant, such as the magazine in his backpack, are excluded from evidence, other items recovered during a later search at the police station—including a firearm and handwritten notes—may be used in court.
