Luigi Mangione plea discussions revealed in unsealed transcripts
Newly unsealed court transcripts have revealed private discussions regarding Luigi Mangione’s decision to plead guilty to federal stalking charges. These charges are linked to the fatal shooting of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson in Manhattan in December 2024.
The documents show that Mangione’s legal team, led by Karen Friedman Agnifilio, sought to conduct plea negotiations privately in late June. The defense requested to postpone certain deadlines to prepare the client and communicate with the family, while specifically asking the court not to signal the impending change in plea to the public docket too early.
Mangione, 28, officially entered his guilty plea to the federal stalking charges on August 14, shortly before jury selection was scheduled to begin for his state murder case. Judge Margaret Garnett, who is presiding over the federal proceedings, had previously kept the June and August hearing transcripts sealed but ordered them unsealed following the guilty plea. Mangione is set to be sentenced on December 18.
