Luigi Mangione pleads guilty to federal stalking in UnitedHealthcare CEO killing
Luigi Mangione has pleaded guilty to two federal stalking charges in connection with the December 2024 killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. During his court appearance, Mangione admitted to tracking Thompson and traveling to Manhattan with the intent to kill him, stating he shot Thompson outside a hotel. He cited long-term frustration with the healthcare system and severe back pain as motivations for his actions.
Following the federal guilty plea, Mangione's defense attorneys filed a motion to dismiss his concurrent state-level charges, including second-degree murder and weapons possession. They argue that proceeding with the state trial would violate double jeopardy protections.
New York Supreme Court Judge Gregory Carro has effectively postponed the state trial, which was originally scheduled to begin on September 8. The judge ordered Manhattan prosecutors to respond to the motion by October 9, with a subsequent court hearing set for December 10. The Manhattan District Attorney's office has indicated it will continue to litigate the case to seek justice for the Thompson family. Mangione faces a maximum sentence of life in prison in the federal case.
