Luigi Mangione pleads guilty to federal charges in Brian Thompson killing FAST-MOVING
Luigi Mangione has pleaded guilty to federal stalking charges in connection with the December 2024 killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in Manhattan. During his court appearance, Mangione admitted to shooting Thompson, stating, “I shot Mr. Thompson and he died,” and noted he was aware his actions were illegal. He explained his motive was revenge against the American healthcare system following years of physical pain from a back injury. Mangione also detailed using a 3D-printed gun with a silencer and posing as an investor to gather information about the conference where the attack occurred.
The federal plea has created a legal conflict with a pending state-level murder trial. Mangione’s defense team has filed a motion to dismiss the state charges, arguing that New York’s double jeopardy laws protect him from being prosecuted twice for the same underlying conduct. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office has indicated it is prepared to litigate this motion.
U.S. District Judge Margaret Garnett has scheduled Mangione’s federal sentencing for December 18. He faces a potential life sentence in federal court. The state murder case, which includes second-degree murder and weapons charges, was originally scheduled to begin jury selection on September 8, though its future remains uncertain pending the ruling on the double jeopardy motion.
