Luigi Mangione pleads guilty to killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson FAST-MOVING
Luigi Mangione, 28, pleaded guilty in a Manhattan federal court to two counts of stalking resulting in death following the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson on December 4, 2024.
During the hearing, Mangione admitted to the killing, stating, “I shot Mr. Thompson in Manhattan and he died.” He explained that his actions were driven by severe physical pain from a broken back and deep-seated frustration with the American health insurance system. He noted that he had researched Thompson's presence at an investor conference in New York to facilitate the attack.
The plea was an open plea, meaning Mangione received no concessions from prosecutors. Both federal stalking charges carry a maximum sentence of life in prison. A sentencing hearing is scheduled for December 18.
In addition to the federal case, Mangione faces state-level charges in New York, including second-degree murder, criminal possession of a forged instrument, and weapons charges. While Mangione's defense has raised arguments regarding double jeopardy, legal experts suggest the state may still proceed with prosecution for homicide.
