Luigi Nave leaves Movimento 5 Stelle to assist new political coalition

Senator Luigi Nave has left the Movimento 5 Stelle (M5S) parliamentary group to join the Mixed Group in the Italian Senate. This move, coordinated with M5S leadership, is intended to facilitate the formation of a new parliamentary component titled ‘Avanti PSI e Progetto Civico Italia’.

This strategic shift aims to assist political figures Alessandro Onorato, founder of Progetto Civico Italia, and Enzo Maraio, national secretary of the Italian Socialist Party, in meeting the requirements for upcoming elections. Under the new electoral law, political formations that lack parliamentary representation must collect between 6,000 and 7,000 signatures per constituency. However, groups that possess a parliamentary seat or component can benefit from a significantly reduced threshold of approximately 1,500 to 2,000 signatures per constituency.

The timing of Nave’s transfer is critical, as the new law will determine signature requirements based on the parliamentary status of groups at the time the law takes effect. By moving to the Mixed Group via Alleanza Verdi e Sinistra, Nave provides the necessary parliamentary presence to lower the signature burden for the new coalition before the upcoming electoral cycle.
