Luis Abinader assumes leadership of the PRM party
Luis Abinader has assumed the presidency of the Dominican Republic's Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM). Because he is constitutionally barred from seeking a third presidential term, his new role within the party is viewed as a political arbiter tasked with maintaining unity ahead of the 2028 elections.
Abinader has stated that he is not assuming the party leadership to support a specific successor, asserting that the next presidential candidate will be chosen through democratic mechanisms. This stance follows comments from former president Hipólito Mejía, who suggested that his daughter, Carolina Mejía, would participate in a democratic convention.
Speculation regarding potential internal candidates has also surfaced, including Tourism Minister David Collado. Observers have noted the significant government support for tourism-related infrastructure projects under Collado's direction, leading to political commentary regarding his standing within the administration.
