Dominican Republic unveils regional development plan for Manzanillo and northern poles

President Luis Abinader has unveiled a strategic regional development plan for the Dominican Republic, focusing on four key growth poles: Manzanillo, Punta Bergantín, Cabo Rojo, and Miches. The initiative aims to decentralize economic activity through massive investments in infrastructure, energy, and tourism.

In the northwest, the Manzanillo Port is a central component, currently at 52.9% physical and 56% financial execution, with an expected delivery in the first quarter of 2027. The plan seeks to turn the area into an energy hub capable of contributing over 800 megawatts to the national grid. Additionally, the Navarrete bypass is slated for completion by late 2026.

In the northern region, the government is executing a road infrastructure portfolio exceeding RD$42.8 billion, with an additional RD$53.59 billion projected through 2028. Key projects include the Ámbar Highway, which will connect Santiago to Puerto Plata, and expansions of the Duarte Highway.

In Santiago, the municipal government and the Presidency are collaborating to update the Territorial Planning Plan, a process expected to conclude in approximately two months to manage the city's rapid urban expansion. Furthermore, President Abinader has temporarily moved his official residence to Santiago from September 14 to 16, 2026, to oversee regional projects and meet with local sectors.
