Luis Abinader faces leadership risks within the PRM

Dominican President Luis Abinader faces the risk of becoming an ‘inorganic president’ of the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) due to his decision to remain neutral in the selection of his successor. By staying on the sidelines, Abinader allows other political currents to take the lead, which could diminish his influence within the party once he leaves office.

Currently, power within the PRM and the government is shared between Abinader’s faction and that of Hipólito Mejía. While this coexistence has maintained party unity, the upcoming selection of the presidential candidate will test this balance. There is a concern that if the nominee does not require Abinader’s direct backing, his leadership may be relegated to the background.

The political landscape could shift significantly if the faction led by Hipólito Mejía successfully nominates Carolina Mejía, which would allow Hipólito to extend his political project and influence. While Abinader could maintain authority by acting as an impartial arbiter, his long-term leadership depends on whether he can retain the recognition of various party currents after his presidency ends.
