Americas diplomacy intensifies through security and bilateral meetings

Diplomatic activity across the Americas is intensifying, with several nations focusing on security and bilateral relations. In Washington, US President Donald Trump received Luis Bakker Villacreses, the new Ecuadorian ambassador, to reaffirm cooperation on security and economic prosperity. This follows Bakker's meeting with Kristi Noem regarding the ‘Americas Shield’ initiative to combat transnational criminal networks.

Costa Rican Foreign Minister Manuel Tovar Rivera also met with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to discuss the political situations in Cuba and Nicaragua, as well as regional security challenges including drug trafficking and illegal mining. Tovar emphasized that Costa Rica’s decision to sever diplomatic ties with Cuba was a sovereign act. Additionally, Costa Rican President Laura Fernández is scheduled to meet with Colombian leadership to address the urgent issue of narcotics trafficking.

In Panama, officials celebrated 58 years of cooperation between Panama and Costa Rica, emphasizing border security and peaceful coexistence. Meanwhile, the Chinese Embassy in Panama marked its 77th anniversary, highlighting growing trade and infrastructure cooperation between China and Panama.

In other developments, Costa Rica is preparing a large delegation for the WorldSkills Shanghai 2026 competition, and the Costa Rican Ministry of Foreign Affairs is monitoring the detention of content creator Julián Valverde by US immigration authorities.
