Argentina Economy Minister Caputo defends stabilization plan and anticipates $50B in investment

Argentine Economy Minister Luis Caputo has defended the government's stabilization program, asserting that the nation must be rebuilt after being 'devastated' over the last 25 years. Speaking at the Córdoba Chamber of Commerce, Caputo emphasized that the administration is addressing the budget deficit as the structural root of economic instability, rather than just treating its consequences like debt and inflation.

Caputo announced that new investments exceeding US$50 billion are expected to arrive, specifically through the Large Investment Incentive Regime (RIGI). He also expressed confidence in the exchange rate, stating that increasing dollar inflows will prevent the currency crises seen in the past. He further characterized President Javier Milei as 'irreplaceable' for maintaining the current economic course.

However, the economic outlook remains complex. Recent data from INDEC shows that monthly inflation rose to 2.1 percent in July, slightly exceeding expectations. Additionally, reports from the Center for Political Economy of Argentina (CEPA) indicate that since the start of the Milei administration, over 411,000 registered jobs have been lost and more than 30,000 companies have closed. While Caputo noted a one percent growth in the industrial sector, other sectors like commerce and manufacturing continue to face significant challenges due to recessionary pressures and reduced consumer purchasing power.
