Luis Caputo mocks economic critics using Calle Corrientes video

Argentine Economy Minister Luis Caputo used social media to dismiss criticisms regarding the country's economic direction and low consumption levels. Responding to a video on X (formerly Twitter) that showed crowds on Buenos Aires' Calle Corrientes despite cold temperatures, Caputo used a sarcastic tone to suggest the footage was “totally biased.”

Caputo remarked, “It is not yet ‘end of the month’ and Calle Corrientes is a ‘necessity consumption’,” while also suggesting that the people in the video likely work in the energy or mining sectors. He added, “Remember that they are the only two sectors that are doing well,” addressing the debate over an “economy at two speeds” where extractive industries thrive while manufacturing, commerce, and construction face slower recovery.

President Javier Milei supported the Minister's stance, as the comments serve to defend the administration's economic model against opposition claims that many citizens are struggling to make ends meet.
