Luis Caputo rejects state bailouts for Argentine credit delinquency

Argentine Economy Minister Luis Caputo has rejected the possibility of state intervention to bail out debtors or financial institutions facing rising credit delinquency. Speaking at the 47th Annual Convention of the Instituto Argentino de Ejecutivos de Finanzas (IAEF), Caputo stated that using taxpayer money to compensate banks for credit losses would be “populism” and “immoral.”

Caputo characterized the current situation as a learning process for the financial system, noting that banks previously focused more on lending to the government than to the private sector. He asserted that the delinquency rate will decrease as banks work directly with clients to refinance debt. He highlighted that Banco Nación has already completed over 100,000 refinancing operations totaling 500,000 million pesos.

Regarding the broader economic landscape, the Minister maintained that the current situation does not pose a systemic risk. He also emphasized the government's commitment to an open economy, aiming to attract investment by lowering taxes and reducing costs to improve competitiveness.
