Guatemala Congress re-elects Luis Contreras as President

The Congress of the Republic of Guatemala has re-elected Deputy Luis Contreras Colindres as President for the 2027-2028 period. The decision was reached with 123 votes in favor and 19 against, marking the final Board of Directors for the X Legislature.

The new leadership team includes Nery Ramos as first vice president, Elmer Palencia as second vice president, and Kevin Luis Carlo Escobar as third vice president. The secretariats will be held by Juan Carlos Rivera, Cornelio García, Obed Castañeda, Orlando Blanco, and Alberto de León.

The election followed negotiations that included the 'Todos' bloc, which secured a position on the board. This inclusion drew criticism from the Raíces group, specifically Deputy Samuel Pérez, who questioned the speed of the approval and the decision to include parties with perceived anti-people commitments. Contreras responded by stating that the board's doors would remain open to all and that he would not take reprisals against those expressing dissent.
