FIFA sanctions Argentina following 2026 World Cup final incidents
FIFA has issued significant disciplinary sanctions against the Argentine Football Association (AFA) and several players following incidents during the 2026 World Cup final against Spain. The AFA faces total fines of $321,000 due to discriminatory chants and the display of a political banner regarding the Malvinas Islands. Additionally, the AFA is ordered to host its next two home matches at 50% spectator capacity and must allocate $100,000 to anti-racism projects.
Individual player sanctions include a 10-match suspension and a $90,000 fine for Leandro Paredes, a seven-match suspension and $90,000 fine for Nahuel Molina, and a one-match suspension for Thiago Almada. Assistant coach Roberto Ayala has also been handed a three-match suspension and a $30,000 fine. Spain's Gavi received a one-match suspension for his involvement in the post-match altercation.
Spain's manager, Luis de la Fuente, criticized the behavior as “intolerable and inadmissible,” stating that his players were the “victims” of the situation. He noted that he had received apologies from Argentine manager Lionel Scaloni and some players. The AFA has indicated it intends to appeal these rulings through FIFA and potentially the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
