Luis Fernandez celebrates 67th birthday amid career tributes

Former footballer and manager Luis Fernandez celebrated his 67th birthday this Friday, prompting tributes to his storied career. Born in Spain and raised in France, Fernandez became a prominent figure at Paris Saint-Germain, where he captained the team to its first French championship title in 1986 and later led them to a Coupe des Coupes victory in 1996 as a manager.

On the international stage, Fernandez was a key member of the French national team's ‘Magic Square’ midfield alongside Michel Platini, Alain Giresse, and Jean Tigana, contributing to France's Euro 1984 victory. He is most famously remembered for his decisive penalty kick during the 1986 World Cup quarter-final against Brazil, which secured France's place in the semi-finals.
