Luis Fernando Velasco placed under house arrest in UNGRD corruption case

The Superior Court of Bogotá has legalized the arrest of former Interior Minister Luis Fernando Velasco Chávez, ordering him to serve house arrest. This decision is part of an ongoing investigation into a corruption scheme involving the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD).

Velasco faces charges including aggravated conspiracy, bribery, and undue interest in the awarding of contracts. The Prosecutor's Office alleges that while serving as Minister of the Interior, Velasco intervened in the allocation of UNGRD contracts to secure political support from congressmen for government projects.

The court's ruling follows a Supreme Court order that granted Velasco a tutela, citing violations of due process in previous proceedings. This new measure does not conclude the investigation or determine criminal responsibility, but requires Velasco to remain under house arrest while the judicial process continues.
